The regional minister-designate for the Volta Region, James Gunu, has pledged to work collaboratively with the Ministers for Roads and Highways and Creative Arts to ensure that tourism in the region reaches its full potential.

Speaking during his vetting in Parliament on Thursday, Mr Gunu acknowledged the many tourist sites in the region. He emphasised that if given the mandate as a minister, he would work closely with these ministries to strengthen the tourism sector.

"The topography of the region itself is a tourist attraction. Fortunately, we have the MP for Ketu South, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, who is joining that ministry. It is my responsibility as the regional minister to collaborate with her, as well as with the Minister for Roads because many of these tourist sites need to be accessible.

"I will work with these two ministers to enhance the tourism potential of the Volta Region," he responded when the Minority Caucus asked about his plans for the region's tourism sector.

The Volta Region boasts numerous tourist attractions, including the famous Mount Gemi, waterfalls, and the canopy walk in Amedzofe—home to the highest human settlement above sea level in West Africa, located in the Ho West District.

Other popular destinations include the Wli Waterfalls in the Hohoe enclave, the monkey forest at Tafi Atome, the snake forest in the Afadzato South District, wildlife forest reserves in Abutia and parts of Adaklu, colonial buildings in Kpando, and the Keta and Anlo enclaves. Slave market in Torkor and many lesser-known sites.

The region is also blessed with beautiful, clean beaches and resorts, particularly along its coastal areas.

Local reports indicate that nearly 1,000 people visit the region on weekends for tourism purposes, including attending festivals and funerals.

However, the lack of motorable roads to many of these tourist sites remains a significant challenge. Additionally, limited publicity and a lack of interest from local residents hinder the unlocking of some lesser-known attractions in the region.

Mr Gunu has vowed to address these issues to revitalise the region’s tourism sector.
