The Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Minister-designate has disclosed his stance on the LGBTQI+ matter saying that as a staunch Christian and with the nature of his upbringing, he is against the group and its activities.
Ebenezer Kum said chiefs and some religious bodies have spoken against the group and that when he's given the nod he would recommend that cabinet does not encourage these practices when it is brought before them.
"For instance, our laws on marriage have not been amended. Marriage as defined in our laws is a union between a man and a woman.
"So with the kind of situation that is going on now, and the enthusiasm that we are getting from our religious leaders and our chiefs, I am very certain that when I am nominated and I do some other consultations with them," he said.
He told Parliament's Appointments Committee during his vetting Friday that the decision is for the state to make in order to put this matter to rest.
"My views may matter but at the end of the day it is the collective wealth of the good people of Ghana that will prevail in finding a lasting solution to these activities."
The discourse of LGBTQI+ resurfaced after a member of the appointments committee asked Minister-designate for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Adwoa Safo about the legalisation of homosexuality in the country, which she expressed her disapproval against the practice.
“The issue of LGBTQI is an issue that when mentioned creates some controversy but what I want to say is that our laws are clear on such practices. It makes it criminal"
“On the issue of its criminality, it is non-negotiable on the issue of cultural acceptance and norms too. These practices are also frowned upon,” Adwoa Safo stated emphatically.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday morning the police stormed and locked down the recently opened office of an LGBTQ group at Ashongman in Accra.
This comes after some religious leaders called for the closure of the office as such activities are alien to the Ghanaian culture and religion frowns on it.
