In a stunning display of athleticism and determination, Koogo Atia emerged winner at the First National Bank Men's Pro Marathon.
The race, which was live broadcast on Joy Prime and its social media platforms, saw the former student of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) conquer the challenging course with a remarkable finishing time of 2 hours, 30 minutes, and 25 seconds.
From the start of the 42.2-kilometre race at the Regional Maritime University in Nungua to the finish line at the Dansoman Keep Fit Club, Mr. Atia led the way.

The annual marathon took a six-year break due to a lack of sponsorship, but thanks to the lead sponsor, First National Bank
In a post-race interview with JoySports Gary Al-Smith and Fentuo Tahiru, Mr. Atia expressed his excitement for coming in first, although he was not happy for failing to achieve his personal targets and, by extension, breaking the national record of 2 hours, 18 minutes.
“My finishing time didn’t impress me because my target was 2 hours, 20 minutes. But in the middle of the race, external obstacles occurred. At one of the market sites, it took me more than 2 minutes before I could meander a way out. That one slowed my pace. My system, too, didn't respond the way I thought it should,” he indicated.
Thousands of spectators gathered to witness the exhilarating event as seasoned athletes from around the country competed in the prestigious marathon.
Atia's outstanding performance not only secured his place at the pinnacle of the competition but also etched his name in the annals of marathon history.
The race, known for its demanding terrain and competitive field, saw Koogo Atia's exceptional endurance and speed shine. As he crossed the finish line, the crowd erupted into cheers, celebrating the culmination of months of rigorous training and dedication.
Atia's journey to victory was not without its challenges. The marathon route tested the limits of each athlete, demanding not only physical prowess but also strategic planning. Atia's strategic approach and unwavering focus played pivotal roles in his success.
The victor stated, “We don’t run against the people. We run against time. That’s the first thing to keep in mind because when you’re training, you train as an individual and you train with your time.”
He races home with a GH¢20,000 cash prize, a GH¢60,000 registration to participate in an international marathon event, as well as several packages from sponsors.
Meanwhile, Portia Anaba completed the 42.2km race in an impressive run of 3 hours, 13 minutes, and 24 seconds to win the First National Bank Female's Pro Marathon.
Blessing Obour won the female junior division race, while Prosper Minsamey emerged victorious as the champion of the male junior division race of the 2023 FNB Accra Marathon.
For the next five years, the FNB Accra Marathon will be hosted on Ghana's number one entertainment TV channel, Joy Prime.
