National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Mahama has intensified his criticism of the judiciary over the ongoing lack of parliamentary representation for the people of Santrokofi, Akpafu, Lolobi, and Likpe (SALL).
Mr Mahama expressed strong disapproval of the absence of representation for SALL residents, who have been without a Member of Parliament since 2020, a situation he views as a profound failure to uphold democratic rights.
The former President noted that the lack of a parliamentary representative leaves SALL residents without a voice to champion their concerns or advocate for essential community needs.
This, he argued, deprives them of equitable access to governance and the opportunity to participate fully in the democratic process.
According to Mahama, every citizen has a fundamental right to representation, which is being denied to the people of SALL.
During his campaign visit to the Akpafu area, Mahama referred to the situation as the “cardinal sin” of Ghana’s Fourth Republic.
He stated that the disenfranchisement of the SALL communities stands as a major blemish on the nation’s democratic record, underscoring the need to uphold every Ghanaian’s right to vote and be represented.
He called on the judiciary to act with urgency, consistency, and fairness in addressing the SALL situation, pointing out that the courts have a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of Ghana’s democracy.
Mr Mahama emphasised that the judiciary’s intervention is essential to restoring justice for the SALL communities and ensuring they are granted the representation they are constitutionally entitled to.
The NDC flagbearer concluded by urging all relevant institutions to prioritize the issue, adding that the people of SALL deserve the opportunity to elect their own parliamentary representative.
He committed to advocating for the residents of SALL and pushing for the necessary changes to avoid similar situations in the future.
“The justice system must be consistent if it is inconsistent, it is not fair to the people of this country, because you can’t treat people, one way. Four years they can be without a member of parliament, it doesn’t matter, their representation is not important to you Gyakye Quayson should be out of parliament for almost two years it doesn’t matter because the Assin North people are not your people, then it comes to NPP."
“The Speaker declares their seat vacant for one and a half months until we go to the election that one it is unheard of, their human rights are being affected I mean, what kind of justice system is this? We believe that an injustice was done to the people of SALL and as it is called the cardinal sin of the fourth republic and never again must this happen,” he stated.
