The former president, John Mahama has donated various items, including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to the Bono Regional Hospital in Sunyani.

This forms as part of his contribution to the fight against the spread of Covid-19, the respiratory disease caused by coronavirus.

The items include 1,105 pieces of hand sanitizers, 20 Veronica buckets, 40 sets of PPEs, 40 gumboots, five bundles of paper tissue and 100 cartons of bottled water.

Bono Regional Chairman of the NDC, Kwadwo Nyamekye Marfo presented the items to the hospital on behalf of the former president.

He was accompanied by Member of Parliament for Banda constituency, Ahmed Ibrahim, parliamentary candidates for Sunyani East and West, Allan Sekyere and Millicent Amankwah Yeboah respectively, some regional and constituency executives, and some party faithful.

The former president has already presented some of these items to some regional hospitals and will do same to cover all regional hospitals in Ghana.

Mr. Marfo said the presentation to the hospital is in appreciation of the good service they continue to render to the general public, adding, “We acknowledge and are that proud of you.

”The former president took notice of the fact that sometimes you feel unprotected in what you do hence the donation of these items to support your work in our effort to combat the disease”, he said.

Receiving the items on behalf of the hospital, the Medical Director of the Bono Regional hospital, Dr. Emmanuel Kofi Amponsah thanked the former president, John Mahama, describing it as the largest number of PPEs they have gotten.

He said some items received already were mostly used on patients, but now the frontline workers have a lot to protect themselves.

“Hitherto, the PPEs were not enough but this quantity is going to boost our morale as we have enough to protect ourselves”.

Dr. Emmanuel Kofi Amponsah also said though the Bono Region has not recorded any covid-19 case, their preparedness is unique such that others can come to monitor and observe how they are doing things.

He added that the region and the hospital have isolation centres ready in the unlikely event they record a covid-19 case.

He appealed to other stakeholders to support the efforts of the government in the battle against the covid-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, social distancing protocols as a means of preventing the spread of covid-19 is not being adhered to at the Sunyani Central market and the Nana Busuma market, also in Sunyani.

When Joy News visited the markets, aside from flouting the social distancing directives, the use of nose mask and hand gloves, washing of hands under running water and the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizer were almost none existence.

One trader said she prays God will spare and protect them while they sell their goods at the market. Another trader also said hopefully they will implement the shift market system to decongest the market.

But until the Sunyani Municipal Assembly confront the non-adherence of the Covid-19 safety protocols, the traders will continue to flout the directives.
