President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled an ambitious initiative aimed at reviving Ghana’s cocoa industry, pledging to add 200,000 hectares of new cocoa farms to the country’s production capacity.
The announcement was made during his tour of the Ahafo Region on Saturday, 31 May, as part of his nationwide Thank You tour.
Addressing cocoa farmers and supporters, President Mahama reiterated his administration’s resolve to restore the cocoa sector to its former glory.
“Plans are underway to revamp the collapsed cocoa sector. Incentives will be provided to our hardworking farmers to increase cocoa production. We aim to add 200,000 hectares of cocoa to Ghana’s output to increase the income of our farmers,” he stated.
He further revealed that the Chief Executive of COCOBOD, Mr Randy Abbey, had assured him of a new cocoa producer price to be announced in August.
According to the President, the upcoming price adjustment would be favourable for farmers. “So those of you who do not have cocoa farms, go and start looking for land and start planting cocoa,” he encouraged.
Ghana’s cocoa industry has faced numerous challenges in recent years, including declining yields, cross-border smuggling, and low producer prices.
The proposed expansion and accompanying incentives are expected to address these issues, revitalise the sector, and restore confidence among farmers who have long awaited comprehensive support.
