The Director of Conflict Resolution for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abraham Amaliba, has disclosed that the party’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, signed the 2024 election peace pact under protest.
This disclosure highlights underlying reservations held by the NDC about aspects of the agreement.
Mahama signed the peace accord on Thursday, 28th November 2024, despite earlier indications from the NDC that they might not participate in the pact.
The peace accord is a customary initiative involving all flagbearers of contesting presidential candidates to ensure peaceful and violence-free elections in Ghana.
In an interview with Channel One TV on Saturday, 30th November 2024, Amaliba clarified that Mahama’s decision to sign the peace agreement was not an unconditional gesture.
Instead, it reflected the party’s commitment to peace while simultaneously expressing their discontent with certain provisions of the accord.
He stressed that the NDC’s participation in the signing ceremony should not be misconstrued as a blanket endorsement of the process.
According to Amaliba, the act was a deliberate decision made under protest to highlight their concerns while prioritizing national stability.
“He has this goodwill from the international countries so, to have a peace pact being signed in your own country where you are an ambassador to ECOWAS, AU, and you say you will not sign, is a bit incongruous. So, clearly, by his nature, he went to sign. But you notice that in signing, I will say he signed under protest."
