President John Dramani Mahama has urged countries within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to strengthen regional solidarity in protecting democratic governance, warning that the collapse of democracy in any single member state undermines the stability and progress of all.
Speaking at the 2025 Democracy Dialogues, organised under the auspices of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, President Mahama stressed that democratic values must be defended collectively if the region is to avoid backsliding into authoritarianism and political instability.
“We must also build regional solidarity, because the fall of democracy in one nation weakens democracy in all other nations.
"As host, Ghana, recommits to upholding democracy, not just in rhetoric but in practice. We will defend the independence of our institutions, support free expression, and continue to stand with ECOWAS in promoting democratic governance across West Africa,” he said.
The President’s call comes at a time when several ECOWAS states face political uncertainty, constitutional crises, and mounting pressure from citizens demanding accountability and better governance.
He outlined a five-point framework for sustaining democracy in West Africa, including strengthening independent courts, parliaments, and electoral bodies; delivering visible development to citizens; protecting press freedom and civic space; educating citizens about democratic values; and fostering cross-border solidarity.
