The Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, says concerns raised by the Majority Leader over the absence of former President John Mahama at state functions are "irrelevant."
Mr Dafeamekpor said he finds it difficult to appreciate the perspective of the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, especially when he has not provided any form of evidence to back his claim.
“Is it his evidence that when the President delivered SONA last week or two, the former President was in town? Is that his evidence? I don't see the relevance at all. Very irrelevant because this is a man who when he was in power invited you to an economic forum and you did not attend," he said.
The Majority Leader while giving his closing comments on the 2022 State of the Nation Address bemoaned the absence of John Dramani Mahama at state functions where President Akufo-Addo is the keynote speaker.
Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said this is not befitting of his status as a former President; adding that the Majority takes exception to this conduct.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on Wednesday, the South Dayi MP stressed that it is hypocritical on the part of the Majority Leader to point fingers at the former President when the now ruling government failed to honour his invitation to events when they were in opposition.
“That is why I tell people you must be careful when chewing the fingers of a monkey because tomorrow, for all you know, that was your sister's fingers you were chewing. When they were doing all manner of things to the former President and they would not participate - if the economy is broke, fix it. You don't need help. Today, they are calling for help, going to him in his house and doing all manner of things.”
The NDC MP told host, Benjamin Akakpo, that Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu is “raising a storm in a tea cup” by his action.
“Does President Kufuor attend every function the President holds?” he further quizzed.
He contended that Mr. John Mahama has been at state functions since he lost the 2016 general elections, except when there are circumstances beyond his control.
“I've been in Parliament since 2017, and I can show photographs where the President came to Parliament and the former President was there.”
Meanwhile, Mr Dafeamekpor has challenged the Majority Leader to provide the said occasions the former President was absence since “you cannot just throw out numbers.”
According to him, in the absence of evidence, the Majority Leader is only engaging in propaganda.
