The Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Murtala Mohammed, has said that under no circumstance will the Minority back down on the quest to get the anti- LGBTQI+ bill passed.
He said just as the United Kingdom and other European countries would not allow any form of imposition, Ghanaians want to be treated in the same way.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story on Tuesday, Mr Mohammed pointed out that the legitimizing of LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana frowns on “our culture, frowns upon our values, and laws.”
“It doesn’t matter how many MPs they deny visas, it doesn’t matter what decision they take in this matter, we will not allow something that is alien to be pushed down our throats,” he emphasised.
The MP reaffirmed the stance of some parliamentarians and Ghanaians on the need to pass the Anti-LGBTQI+ bill into a law no matter the pressure being exerted by foreign powers on the government.
“We are aware of the pressure exerted on them by these foreign missions and these Western world, we are aware, we are well aware of it. We are aware that aid and financial assistance have been weaponised by these people and that has been the fear. We are well aware," he said.
He added that the MPs in Parliament who are against such practices, would ensure that the Promotion of Proper Human Rights and Ghanaian Values Bill, 2021 is passed.
He used the opportunity to call on President Akufo-Addo to openly declare his position on the issue, because “the silence of government is so loud” on the LGBT debate.
“What we are asking for is not something that is impossible. If the President cannot do that let the Minister for Justice and Attorney-General tell us publicly,” he said.
