Former Black Stars striker Yaw Preko, believes Ghana's World Cup qualifier versus Nigeria, presents an immediate opportunity for the Black Stars to win back Ghanaians.
The Black Stars experienced the darkest moment of their history in Cameroon, at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, where they were knocked out in the group stages without winning a single game.
In reality, Ghanaians did not tip the team to go on to win the tournament, but the depth of failure was one which was very much unexpected. And as a result, Ghanaians made their feelings known. The team definitely made reception of their grievances as they crept back into the country.
After returning to their various club sides, some members of the team like Thomas Partey, Alexander Djiku, Daniel Amartey and Kofi Kyereh took to social media to apologize to Ghanaians. But Preko has challenged the Stars to make a proper apology for the chaotic show in Cameroon by beating Nigeria.
"Ghana is really disappointed in them so they need to make amends and this is the game to do that. Fortunately, unfortunately it's going to be against Nigeria. When you're able to kick Nigeria out, the support will come again and everybody will be on our side."
Nonetheless, Preko recognizes the difficulty of the task ahead for a team which cannot afford to miss a second consecutive World Cup, so he has urged the players to believe in their talent.
"It's not going to be easy for the boys. Playing against Nigeria, they can do you or you can do them- it goes both ways. I remember my first game for the Black Stars was against Nigeria way back in 1991 against the likes of Stephen Keshie, Eguavoen and the rest. I took it like 'this is my first match. Come on, go in and do your thing'".
The Black Stars will host the Super Eagles in Ghana on March 25, before playing the final leg in Abuja two days later.
Head coach, Otto Addo is yet to announce a squad for the game.
