Former Tamale Central MP, Inusah Fuseini, has issued a sharp warning to sitting legislators, insisting that every MP must be conscious of their conduct because every action in parliament carries consequences.
His caution follows Speaker Alban Bagbin’s referral of Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to the Privileges Committee for alleged contempt of parliament.
The referral was triggered by a petition from Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga after Afenyo-Markin challenged a move to exclude him from Ghana’s ECOWAS delegation.
Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Thursday, November 27, Inusah Fuseini stressed that MPs must take the rules seriously and be guided by them at all times.
He said lawmakers should familiarise themselves with the Standing Orders to avoid conduct that could attract punitive action.
“As a member of Parliament, the first thing you should acquaint yourself with is your conduct. What conduct will be a subject matter of referral to the Privileges Committee.
"It doesn’t matter whether you are the Majority Leader or the Minority Leader. What is important is that, does the conduct exhibited does not infringe a provision of the standing orders,” he said.
Fuseini further warned that Afenyo-Markin could face expulsion if the Privileges Committee finds him in breach of the Standing Orders. He insisted that no MP, regardless of position, is shielded from sanctions.
“No leader, whether from the Majority or the Minority, is immune from expulsion in parliament if you read Article 97 carefully,” he added.
His comments add fresh urgency to the growing tensions in parliament, as MPs brace for the committee’s next steps.
