Dr Kofi Koduah Sarpong, a former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), has expressed strong confidence in the leadership potential of New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirant Kennedy Agyapong, describing him as well-suited to revitalise the party’s grassroots.
Dr Sarpong, widely known as K.K. Sarpong, says the NPP requires a candidate capable of energising its core supporters and reclaiming parliamentary and traditional strongholds lost in recent elections.
“Kennedy is a perfect fit,” he said. “We needed someone who would move the base. Our parliamentary seats were taken away from us. Even our traditional seats, we lost them.”
According to Dr Sarpong, mobilising the party’s grassroots and driving voter participation should be a key consideration in the selection of the NPP’s next flagbearer.
He argued that Mr Agyapong had demonstrated the ability to connect with ordinary party supporters across the country.
“We needed someone who would ginger the base for them to go and vote,” he stated in an interview with Channel One TV.
“And for me, one thing that goes for Kennedy Agyapong was that he was the man of the moment — the youth, the grassroots, their choice.”
Dr Sarpong further pointed to Mr Agyapong’s appeal among young people as a major asset, suggesting that his charisma and popularity could help re-energise the party ahead of future elections.
“He’s got the charisma; they love him, they follow him,” he added.
