Outgoing Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has expressed optimism about the New Patriotic Party (NPP) reclaiming the constituency’s parliamentary seat if strategic efforts are made.
Speaking in an interview following the resumption of the parliamentary session after a long break, Adwoa Safo stated that she is cognisant of the fact that the affiliation to her father's Kristo Asafo Church played an important part in the seat's retention for the party.
"A very important factor is my dad and the church. I think that moving forward as a party we have to have a look at that in the constituency, what role does it play, what pointers does it give to us moving forward," she told journalists on Monday, December 16.
Her comments come after the NPP lost the seat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Faustina Elikplim Akurugu, in the recently concluded elections.
Mrs Adwoa Safo also addressed criticisms regarding her absence from the constituency campaign, clarifying that she had communicated her decision to focus on the party’s national campaign efforts.
"I think that those are [people] just criticizing for criticizing sake."
She said after she lost the primary, "From the moment I lost that seat in my primary, I made it clear that I will be joining the national campaign."
Then outgoing legislator says she did all in her power to allow the NPP candidate room to potentially win the just-ended poll, a plan which did not materialize.
The former MP faced scrutiny in the lead-up to the elections, with some party members accusing her of neglecting her responsibilities.
However, she reiterated her commitment to the NPP and encouraged the party to assess and address the factors that led to their defeat in Dome Kwabenya.
