The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has called for renewed efforts to strengthen the party’s dominance in the Volta Region, a long-time NDC stronghold.
Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Monday, December 2, he addressed former President John Mahama’s concerns that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is making inroads in the region, urging the party to avoid complacency.
“It is more of an issue of saying, let’s not be complacent,” Fifi Kwetey emphasised.
“Let’s not just assume that somehow we are going to continue winning massively without the need for us to do the extra work that needs to be done.
"That’s not to say that suddenly we’re expecting the Volta Region, which is a stronghold of the NDC, to somehow become significantly worse as far as the NDC is concerned. No.”
The Ketu South MP reiterated the need to remind the people of Volta of the NDC’s developmental track record.
“We’ve had a track record of doing a lot for you. This is a party that clearly has shown faith as far as the people are concerned,” he said.
Addressing narratives that the NDC has taken the Volta Region for granted, he argued that the party’s achievements speak for themselves.
“Of course, it’s the NPP’s business to constantly say, ‘You know, they’re taking you for granted.’ But we have shown to be a better political party.”
Fifi Kwetey drew comparisons between the NDC’s strategies in Volta and its efforts in the NPP-dominated Ashanti Region.
“We do the same thing in Ashanti, where we tell the Ashanti people that when it comes to genuine development, we in NDC have actually delivered far more for Ashanti Region than the NPP has delivered,” he claimed, citing projects like the Kejetia Market, Kumasi Airport expansion, and other major infrastructure developments initiated under NDC governments.
While Mr Kwetey acknowledged the natural competitiveness of politics, he underscored the importance of keeping the NDC’s base motivated.
“Politics is normal. Your opponent will try to convince people that normally do not vote for them,” he explained.
“You saw the same thing happen in America, where Trump clearly made a play for Black votes, for Hispanic votes—votes that generally did not go for Republicans.”
Similarly, he observed, the NPP is attempting to make a case for itself in the Volta Region. “The NPP will play that in the Volta Region.
The NDC will do that in the Ashanti Region. The job is to try to make sure you convince your people in order to stay solid behind you.”
Fifi Kwetey took the opportunity to contrast the two major parties’ governance records, emphasising the NDC’s efficiency with limited resources.
“We’re talking about a government that, in eight years, had access to $20 billion, and the NPP is now talking about almost $800 billion in terms of loans and borrowing.
"And yet, we can match you with what we achieved with $20 billion,” he argued.
“That’s a massive achievement, and that’s what makes the NDC a great political party that clearly has shown faith—not just in Volta Region, but in other regions of the country.”
Fifi Kwetey acknowledged that the NPP’s efforts in the Volta Region are part of a broader political strategy and called for vigilance and proactive engagement.
“The job is not to assume loyalty but to work to earn it every time. That’s what we’re doing in Volta Region and everywhere else,” he concluded.
