South Africa continues to be a top travel destination for Ghanaians, with over 36,600 Ghanaian visitors recorded between January and December 2024, according to the Acting South African High Commissioner to Ghana. 

This growing number, according to H.E. Thando Dalamba, underscores the strong attraction South Africa holds for Ghanaian travelers and tourists, whether for leisure, business, education, or adventure.

South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner to Ghanaemphasized this during the Accra Polo Club’s Independence Cup over the weekend, an event supported by the South African High Commission and West Africa Office of South African Tourism. He noted that the consistent travel numbers demonstrate the deep affinity Ghanaians have for South Africa.

“The figures show that Ghanaians love South Africa. Whether it’s for tourism, business, or cultural exchanges, South Africa remains a favorite destination,” Mr. Dalamba stated.

South Africa’s tourism sector offers a wide range of experiences that continue to appeal to Ghanaians, from the bustling city life of Johannesburg and Cape Town to the iconic safaris of Kruger National Park. Additionally, South Africa’s shopping, nightlife, and historical landmarks, including Robben Island and the Apartheid Museum, have been key attractions for Ghanaian travelers.

Beyond leisure, South Africa has also been an important hub for education and business, with many Ghanaians choosing the country for academic pursuits and investment opportunities. The recent visa waiver between the two countries and ease of flight connectivity between Accra and major South African cities has further facilitated travel, making it a convenient and attractive destination.

South African Tourism’s ongoing efforts to engage with the Ghanaian market have played a significant role in sustaining these travel numbers. The organization has actively supported events such as the Achimota Gulf Club’s Play with Stephen and Accra Polo Club’s Independence Cup, which brings together influential figures from Ghana’s corporate and social circles. These engagements help reinforce South Africa’s presence in Ghana, ensuring that more travelers consider South Africa as their preferred destination.

Thando Dalamba also noted that the South African Minister of Tourism will be visiting Ghana at the end of March. The upcoming visit of Minister Patricia De Lille, is expected to further enhance tourism and trade cooperation between the two nations. With tourism playing a key role in both economies, industry experts anticipate discussions around increasing promotional efforts jointly, and expanding partnerships between Ghanaian and South African tourism stakeholders.

As the demand for South African travel continues to grow among Ghanaians, both governments and tourism bodies are working towards making travel experiences smoother, more exciting, and more accessible. With the combination of strong diplomatic ties, cultural exchanges, and strategic tourism promotions, South Africa’s position as a top destination for Ghanaian travelers is set to strengthen even further in the years to come.
