Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on President Nana Akufo-Addo to show the same urgency in paying Independent Power Producers (IPPs) as he did in funding his private jet travels.
Dr Boamah’s remarks were made in a social media post on Wednesday, October 16, following the shutdown of Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Limited's 560 MW power plant due to the Electricity Company of Ghana's (ECG) failure to meet its overdue payment obligations.
In his post, Dr Omane Boamah criticised the government’s inability to settle its debts with power producers, which he warned could have dire consequences for the energy sector and Ghana’s economy.
He pointed out that the President’s administration should prioritise payments to IPPs just as it allegedly did for luxurious private jet trips that allowed the President to "bathe in the sky."
The shutdown by Sunon Asogli has sparked concerns about the stability of the power supply in the country, given that the plant plays a crucial role in Ghana's energy generation. Dr.
He urged the government to act swiftly in addressing the ECG’s outstanding payments to avoid further disruptions in power supply, which could affect households and industries across the country.
"Akufo-Addo should have the same audacity to pay Independent Power Producers (IPPs) just as he was paying for his luxurious private jet trips that allowed him to bathe in the sky."
"This government had no business subjecting Ghanaians to dumsor after the many power plants it inherited from Mahama when he fixed dumsor."
He also cautioned IPPs not to wait until John Dramani Mahama becomes president before demanding payment from his administration.
“Let me also advise the IPPs not to wait until Mahama becomes president only to be flooding his administration with payment of their debts,” he added.
