President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his government's commitment to expanding access to quality healthcare, announcing plans to recruit 16,000 nurses in two phases to strengthen service delivery, particularly in underserved communities.

Speaking at the Free Primary Healthcare Programme durbar on Thursday, July 16, at the Ho Municipal Hospital as part of his two-day Resetting Ghana Tour of the Volta Region, President Mahama said the recruitment forms part of broader efforts to improve healthcare access and achieve Universal Health Coverage.

He said the Free Primary Healthcare Programme would enable Ghanaians to access essential services at CHPS compounds, health centres and polyclinics without financial barriers.

The President also commended the management and staff of the Ho Municipal Hospital for a century of dedicated service and praised health professionals nationwide for their contribution to the country's healthcare system.

He urged Ghanaians to prioritise regular health screening and healthy lifestyles to promote early detection and prevention of diseases.

President Mahama further highlighted ongoing government investments in the health sector, including new cardiac centres, upgrades to the Ho Teaching Hospital, and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (Mahama Cares), which provides support for patients living with serious non-communicable diseases.
