"Whoever has participated in the plunder of the state must be held accountable. This is not a threat; it is a promise...", this is the clarion call by Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the National Democratic Congress’ presidential running-mate for Election 2024.
Speaking at a ceremony to officially outdoor her in Accra following her selection as the NDC's presidential running-mate, she noted that despite the many complaints by the general public of corruption adversely affecting the country, the government has chosen not to take any action.
However, Prof Opoku-Agyemang believes that it is time to build a better country for posterity and this includes taking steps to hold people accountable for stealing from the state, and for which the NDC/Mahama administration, if it gets the nod, will hold to account anyone guilty of looting from the state.
“Across the political divide, across social and professional groupings, among the youth, you hear of complaints and stories concerning state capture, where this government has chosen to use its power not in the broader interest of all Ghanaians but to favour a small clique. What is that?”
“John (Mahama) and I have agreed, that whoever has participated in the plunder of the state must be held accountable. This is not a threat; it is a promise, premised on the wishes of our citizens across the various political and social divides, and hinged on the principle of accountability,” Prof Opoku-Agyemang said.
She called out the ruling government for among other things, giving jobs to family or friends and pretending they're skilled, claiming to be courageous to mask their weakness and disguising crony capitalism as progress and freedom.
These, she stated, have never helped any country determined to make progress at any level.
“Rather, the most significant achievement of these things has been a country in near insolvency, its natural resources such as water and land and environment in rebellion, a people harassed and intimidated into numbness and as some say cynically, bribed into silence,” she said.
Prof Jane Opoku-Agyemang promised Ghanaians a John Mahama-led government would be the opposite, characterised by projects that are helpful to the people.
The projects would include clinics, health centres, school expansion projects, new classroom blocks, new roads, railway lines, an improved bus system and facilitating a 24-hour economy.
“It is a vision anchored on the firm belief that with the right policies and incentives in place, we can inspire a new generation of enterprises to adopt a multi-shift work system and wider participation in the economy, thereby ushering us into a new golden era of Ghanaian industry.”
