The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a young man suspected of being a serial motorbike thief in the Accra Metropolis.
Emmanuel Akampatiba, the suspect, is assisting the police in investigations for allegedly stealing 12 motorbikes within a week in Accra.
Police Superintendent Juliana Obeng, the Head of Public Affairs, in a news brief, said that upon intelligence, the police traced a stolen motorbike to the suspect, and during interrogation, he admitted the crime.
Akampatiba mentioned his alleged accomplice as Israel and Fredrick Lomotey, currently at large.
During questioning, Akampatiba disclosed that the stolen bikes were transported to the Agbogbloshie Onion Market in Accra, where he sold them to unknown buyers, with the names Nurudeen, Ali, and Inusah.
Supt. Obeng said suspect Akampatiba, was picked up on June 24, after a resident of Madina reported the theft of his red Royal motorbike from his home in the night.
Investigations revealed that there had been wider networks involving at least 12 motorbike thefts in areas including Madina, Adenta, Lapaz, and Teshie, she said.
However, Akampatiba again confessed to breaking the steering locks of the motorbikes before transporting them to Agbogbloshi,e where he sold them for GH¢2,000.00 and GH¢3,000.00, depending on the year of registration.
Supt. Obeng said efforts were underway to arrest the remaining accomplices and recover more of the stolen motorbikes.
She advised the public to safeguard their personal and valuable items and not to hesitate to report to the nearest police station on any questionable activity.
