An Accra High Court has granted a request by the Ghana Police Service to restrain the National Democratic Congress (NDC) from organising further protests in Accra.

The restraining order granted by the Justice Elfreda Amy Dankyi is expected to prevent the opposition party from demonstrating until January 10, 2021.

For nearly two weeks, the sympathisers of the NDC have organised numerous street protests following the declaration of Nana Akufo-Addo as President-elect in the just-ended polls.

NDC presidential candidate, John Mahama has described the EC’s verdict as fictionalised to favour the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

His position has been backed strongly by NDC supporters who have hit the streets to demand that the announcement be overturned.

The NDC is also contesting the result of some parliamentary seats which it said its candidates won. So far, they have bagged Sene West and have now turned their attention to Techiman South.

In a statement by the Accra Regional Police Command, it said, “the prohibition order follows an affidavit filed by the police upon receipt of notification from the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of NDC, Kobina Ade Coker, on intended daily protests within the above-mentioned dates in Accra and all constituencies across the region.”

"The request by the NDC cannot obviously be met by the police in view of ongoing post-election and multifaceted security operations for the festive season and beyond," it said.

The release signed by the Command's Public Relations Officer (PRO) Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Effia Tenge further urged the sympathisers of the party to refrain from engaging in activities that may go contrary to the court order.

"The Regional Police Command is hereby drawing the attention of the general public especially sympathisers, followers and supporters of the NDC, to the restriction order and compliance," the statement added.
