Months after JoyNews launched the Ghana Potholes Exhibition series, the exercise has begun yielding the intended outcomes.
The exercise was launched by JoyNews in May 2023 to bring to the attention of the relevant authorities the rampant deplorable state of some major roads in the country for necessary intervention.
The series further highlighted the potential risks of these potholes in the middle of major road networks in causing accidents leading to the death of precious lives and loss of valuable properties.
Launched under the hashtag GhPotholes, the exercise gained massive support from Ghanaians who shared their experiences with these unmotorable roads with other viewers of JoyNews.

Others also shared pictures and videos of some potholes found in their vicinities making mobility a herculean task on social media.
As intended, the exercise has begun bearing the anticipated fruits.
One of the major stretches prominently featured in the series was the Odorkor Traffic Light enclave on the Accra-Kasoa-Cape Coast Highway. Commuters who ply that road on numerous occasions during the #Ghpotholes series complained bitterly about the damage these potholes are causing their vehicles in addition to the frustrating heavy traffic.
But to the amazement of commuters, following the feature of the road in the exhibition, a contractor is currently on-site giving that part of the road a major facelift.

To get firsthand information, a team from JoyNews visited the stretch on Thursday to interact with the road users on what sort of relief the intervention has brought them.
Moses Attram, who is an official of the Odorkor Lorry Terminal, praised the government for the intervention adding that the drivers of the terminal can now heave a sigh of relief.
“I’m thanking my president. Now he has done well for me because initially, the place was very rough causing huge traffic and unnecessary delays. The drivers at the station were very agitated but now they have seen works currently ongoing on the stretch. The way it is now it is good. They should just come and put asphalt on it for us,” he told JoyNews.
One other ride-hailing driver also bemoaned the initial congestion caused by the damaged road but expressed his relief with the construction works on the stretch. He however demanded more from the authorities.

“It was hell initially. There was unnecessary traffic and congestion initially but now I think there has been some improvement. The fact still remains that this is nothing to write home about considering what we pay for roadworthy and those things, the roads keep destroying our cars. There has been some improvement we can only take it like that,” he noted.
A taxi driver who is a frequent user of the road lauded the authorities for listening to their cries.
He said,” this road has been damaged for a very long time. We thank God that they have started construction work on it. I am just hoping that they continue and do not abandon it midway. “
A private user of the road was specifically happy about the ease in traffic the facelift would bring to them.
“Before, because of the potholes at the very aspect of it, they normally cause traffic jams. At times the green light will be on but because of the pothole, it will take a very long time before you can cross to the other side. But this time that they are repairing the damage, I think it’s a very good intervention,” he noted.
JoyNews will continue to monitor the impact of the Ghana Potholes Exhibition series and update our viewers and readers.
