Leader of the Volta Caucus in Parliament says although the death of former President Jerry John Rawlings will affect the campaign of the NDC, it will not prevent the party from winning the elections.
Emmanuel Bedzrah told JoyNews that parties like the Conventional People Party (CPP) and New Patriotic Party (NPP), even though their founders are dead they still forge ahead.
The Ho MP indicated that the party’s founder, Mr Rawlings, had enormous supporters who can still hold the fort and impel the NDC forward despite his demise.
“We must grow as a party. Fortunately, he was around in NDC 1 and NDC 2 but unfortunately, he isn’t here to witness the NDC 3 leadership.
“It is time for us to show our strength that even in his death we were able to win power to give him a resting place as a party. So indeed it will affect our campaign but I don’t think it will affect our chance of winning,” he said.
Former President Jerry John Rawlings died Thursday morning at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) in Accra.
The 73-year-old is said to have died after he contracted Covid-19 and was rushed to the intensive care unit of the hospital.
Mr Rawlings founded the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) after he switched from his military rule to a democratic one in 1992.
Remembering his idol, Mr Bedzrah said although the former President was not perfect, he touched many lives in the country.
He believed that the social justice ideology of Mr Rawlings contributed to the development of the nation.
"You cannot quantify this loss, some may not like his way of doing things, he is not a perfect man. But he just cuts across, because you may like him today, tomorrow you may not like him.
"And if you want to understand who Jerry is, get close to him and you will know. There are times that his actions, will not be the best but after sometime when you think through, you will begin to understand him," he said.
