Member of Parliament for Subin Constituency, Eugene Antwi has said the country risks further economic doom if President Akufo-Addo fails to sack Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.

Some New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentarians are demanding the sacking of Ken Ofori-Atta as Finance Minister.

The MPs, numbering about 80, held a press conference on Tuesday to impress on the President to relieve his cousin of the responsibility of managing the national purse or risk losing their support for government business going forward.

They also want the Minister of State in charge of Finance at the Ministry of Finance, Charles Adu Boahen, to be subjected to a similar fate.

The Subin MP is among the majority of NPP MPs who have called for the dismissal of Mr. Ofori-Atta.

Speaking on Top Story, Tuesday, Mr. Antwi expressed worry over the performance of the Finance Minister and the Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Charles Adu-Boahen.

He stressed that failure to sack Ken Ofori-Atta will result in “very difficult times ahead for this country”.

“He is part of the problem, so he cannot be part of the solution. Ken Ofori-Atta must go, I am afraid he must go…it is not something we are proud of doing, but we must support this government in succeeding. We want President Akufo-Addo to leave a befitting legacy,” he said.

He said the party does not want some ‘underperforming’ cabinet members to denigrate the legacy of President Akufo-Addo ahead of the 2024 elections.

According to him, the country is governed by a democratic system thus, if the majority of NPP MPs have made such a call, President Akufo-Addo must take action immediately.

“We are running a democracy, not a family dynasty, so if the members of your party and so-called leaders of the various constituencies of the party are making a clarion call to you the President, you must respond and act decisively,” he stated.

President Akufo-Addo will later this evening meet with NPP MPs over their demand for the sacking of Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.

“The Honourable Haruna Iddrisu said it in a business committee yesterday. The motion is ready, he did not want to surprise the Majority Leader,” Mr. Banda said.
