Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways, Alhassan Suhuyini, has underscored the urgent need for the country to remain committed to using the Road Fund exclusively for financing road infrastructure.
According to him, this approach is essential to ensuring sustainable funding for road projects and avoiding the accumulation of excessive debt.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, on Thursday, July 10, Mr Suhuyini revealed that one of the ministry’s key challenges is the lack of a reliable and dedicated source of funding for road development.
He stressed that the diversion of road funds for other purposes has historically undermined the sector’s progress.
"There is a need for us to have a dedicated fund for these important projects," he said.
He cited examples of how the government had struggled to fund the construction of major roads in the national capital, Accra, such as the Madina road and the N1 highway.
The Deputy Minister’s remarks come at a time when the ministry is contending with a GH¢21 billion debt owed to road contractors.
He believes that with disciplined use of the Road Fund, the country's road sector can be strengthened without incurring unsustainable financial burdens.
Meanwhile, the government has released GH¢4 billion to the ministry for onwards payment to contractors.
