A July 8th, 2023, flood left ravaging effects on Ho and surrounding communities in the Ho Municipality of the Volta Region.
People’s investments, personal belongings, and food items were swept away by the flood, recorded to be the biggest experienced within the last 2 decades. Some buildings in the affected areas were severely damaged.
The National Disaster Management Organization was unable to perform its mandated duties of providing relief items to cushion victims in the interim.
The Volta Regional NADMO Director, Ivy Amewuga said her outfit was handicapped in providing relief items to the over 1,000 victims.
At the time, she explained that her outfit had limited stock in the warehouse which wouldn't be enough, hence called for support from other well-meaning Ghanaians and organizations.
This led to the Rotary Club of Ho donating some food and toiletries through NADMO to the victims, after about a month.
In total, 75 bags of rice, 250 bottles of oil, and 120 packs of soap were handed over to NADMO for onward distribution to the victims.
The President of the Rotary Club of Ho, Alphonse Dzakpasu, said the flood was the biggest he had ever seen in his over 10 years stay in Ho.
He said that his outfit being a service organization solicited funds from members of the Rotary District to purchase some items for the victims.
"We are happy to touch the lives of the victims in our own small way, we hope they find their feet soon and heal quickly from the effects of the flood", he said.
However, the size of some main storm drains and culverts in Ho was identified as a contributing factor to the perennial floods.
Technocrats and stakeholders, therefore, suggested an expansion of the drains to prevent annual flooding.
Ivy Amewuga said reports have been sent to the appropriate government agencies awaiting approval.
