Minister nominee for the Ashanti Region, Dr Frank Amoakohene, says schools in Obuasi will reopen once peace is assured, following violent clashes between illegal miners and military personnel that resulted in the deaths o nine persons at AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine.
In the wake of the unrest, both public and private schools in Obuasi have been temporarily closed for safety reasons.
Students have been instructed to stay home as a precaution. Despite the increased security presence in the area, local authorities have decided to keep schools closed until the situation has stabilised.
Speaking on JoyNews' PM Express, Dr Amoakohene explained that the reopening of schools hinges on the restoration of peace and security in the town.
He reassured the public that the government is working with local stakeholders to resolve the situation and ensure the safety of residents.
Dr Amoakohene expressed optimism that through continued engagement, peace would be restored, enabling schools and other normal activities to resume.
“We cannot keep schools closed indefinitely,” Dr Amoakohene said. “The safety and well-being of our students are our top priority. Once we are certain that peace has been fully restored and the community feels secure, we will reopen the schools and allow life to return to normal.”
