The Government of Sierra Leone has introduced a mandatory online health declaration system for all travellers entering or departing the country in a move aimed at strengthening disease surveillance and safeguarding public health.

According to a press statement issued on Wednesday, July 8, the new requirement, which took effect on June 18, applies to every traveller, including Sierra Leonean citizens, foreign nationals, returning residents and visitors.

Ghanaian citizens planning to travel to Sierra Leone have also been advised to comply fully with the new regulations to ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey.

According to the Sierra Leonean public health authorities, all travellers must complete an online Health Declaration Form through the country's official Health Travel Portal within 72 hours before travelling.

As part of the process, travellers are required to provide accurate personal and travel information, including their correct and updated seat number before departure.

Upon successful submission, the system generates a QR code or reference number, which travellers must retain and present to the relevant authorities whenever requested during their journey.

The authorities emphasised that the new measure forms part of efforts to enhance disease surveillance, improve border health management and strengthen national, regional and global public health security.

Travellers have been warned that submitting false, inaccurate or misleading information could lead to delays, denial of entry or departure clearance, or additional health screening upon arrival or departure.

The advisory also urges anyone who feels unwell before, during or after travelling to immediately report to a Point of Entry Health Officer and seek appropriate medical attention.

According to the Government, information submitted through the online portal will be used strictly for public health purposes, including disease prevention and surveillance, and will be handled confidentially in accordance with applicable data protection requirements.

Even after completing the online declaration, travellers arriving in Sierra Leone may still be required to undergo health screening and any other public health measures deemed necessary by the country's health authorities. Travellers are therefore expected to cooperate fully with health officials throughout the travel process.

To assist passengers who may experience challenges completing the online declaration, designated Point of Entry Health personnel will be available at official entry and exit points across Sierra Leone to provide the necessary support.

The Government has encouraged all travellers to complete the Health Declaration Form before departure, stressing that early registration and the accurate submission of information will help minimise delays, facilitate smoother travel and ensure compliance with Sierra Leone's public health regulations.

The authorities noted that the new system is intended not only to protect travellers but also to strengthen the country's ability to respond to potential public health threats while contributing to broader international efforts to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
