Majority leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has announced that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will submit a formal memo outlining their concerns regarding recent decisions taken by the Speaker.
Speaking to the press on Monday, 3rd February, Mr Afenyo-Markin expressed dissatisfaction with the Speaker’s handling of certain parliamentary matters and called for affected members to be heard.
"We are going to ferry our concerns in a memo to his office, and we believe that it would even form the basis for discussions," Afenyo-Markin said.
He added that the NPP was unsure of how to address the Speaker’s communication, or what he referred to as “properly so-called communication,” highlighting confusion over procedural matters in the House.
The NPP MP specifically referred to the Speaker’s actions as having a direct impact on the rights of certain Members of Parliament, stating, "Mr Speaker has taken actions that have affected the rights of our colleagues in Parliament."
The MP also pointed out the importance of parliamentary procedure, noting that when a matter is brought to the floor, the Speaker is expected to rule on it, and if necessary, members can challenge the ruling based on established parliamentary rules.
"There’s a provision in the orders where if there is a motion or a matter that comes to the floor, Mr Speaker will rule on the matter, and if there is a ruling, then you would have to rely on the rules to also challenge his ruling," Afenyo-Markin explained.
The NPP, according to Afenyo-Markin, seeks a fair process and an opportunity for those affected by the Speaker’s decisions to have their voices heard.
"We believe that the right thing to do is to grant these affected members a hearing," he said, suggesting that the party will continue to press for a transparent and inclusive process in Parliament.
