Twenty-seven (27) children in the Ho Municipality of the Volta Region have received a three-month intensive training in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Science Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education.
The training was organised by a Ho-based non-profit organisation, Genious Brainey IT. The programme is known as the Future of Technology (Futech).
The beneficiaries are Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) graduates, waiting to be enrolled in secondary school.
According to the founder and Chief Executive Officer of the organisation, Desmond Kitsi, he trained the children in robotics, graphic design, computer programming and website development.
He said, "The Futech project is a holistic programme that is curated to support the development of young people in the Volta Region, especially with skills in entrepreneurship, digital skills and leadership".
The children at the event demonstrated what they've learnt. They made presentations on website development, graphic designing and pitching Digital solutions to solving problems of climate change.
They were awarded a certificate of participation. This year's graduation is the fourth one since the initiative started.
Speaking at the ceremony held in Ho on Friday, September 20, the Ho Municipal Education Director, Dr Esther Adzoa Yeboah Agyemang said "This is a very laudable initiative because as we are aware we have our standard base curriculum now which incorporates STEM education into the basic school and so there's the need for us to expose our children especially to technology".
She advocated for the establishment of a STEM school in the Volta Region.
The Ho Municipal National Youth Authority's (NYA) director, Charles Kwesi Gomenu, praised the initiative saying it exposes the children to job opportunities.
He urged parents to support their wards to have more such training.
He however expressed concern about the lack of STEM-dedicated schools in the Volta region and appealed to the Ministry of Education to establish one in the region to help bridge the gap.
Genius Brainy IT, however, called for collaboration and sponsorship to expand the training to other parts of the region.
