The Supreme Court will continue the hearing of the election petition sent to it by NDC flagbearer, John Mahama on Friday, February 5.
The former President who lost Ghana’s 2020 presidential elections to the NPP's Nana Akufo-Addo has filed an election petition at the apex court seeking to have the results annulled.
He alleges that Mr. Akufo-Addo benefited from vote padding and computational errors supervised and carried out by the Electoral Commission.
The petitioner has since called two witnesses - General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, and Dr. Michael Kpessa-Whyte, a member of the Party to back his claims.
At the last sitting, the Supreme Court in a unanimous decision turned down a request by Mr. Mahama to be allowed to inspect some six documents in the custody of the Electoral Commission (EC).
This was after the counsel for the EC and President Akufo-Addo raised some objections.
The two teams had argued that the documents are already in the custody of Mr Mahama through his agents who monitored the elections across the country.
They also insisted that the court applies its decision on the same issue in the 2012/2013 petition where it denied such a request.
But addressing the 7-member panel of judges after the ruling, lead counsel for the petitioner, Tsatsu Tsikata said, Mr. Mahama would like to call a third witness after filing only two for the substantive trial.
He explained that the new witness had some health complications and due to the confidentiality of the witness’ health issue, he would prefer the Court to hear him in chambers.
The court subsequently adjourned sitting to Friday, February 5, to give its ruling on the matter.
