The Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM) has cautioned that Ghana could face a generational education catastrophe if urgent steps are not taken to address mounting teacher shortages.
Citing independent assessments, the group said projected learning losses could reach 64 per cent in arithmetic and 18 per cent in reading.
It warned that the crisis could push more than 1.2 million children into learning poverty.
“This is a looming generational tragedy that no responsible government should tolerate,” the conveners stressed.
In its statement, CDM criticised the absence of a clear recruitment timeline following the reading of the 2026 Budget.
It said the lack of transparency has created anxiety among unemployed trained teachers and parents alike.
“What is most disturbing is the government’s persistent silence on teacher recruitment timelines,” the group added.
“Education is not a privilege; it is a constitutional right, and its continued denial to millions of Ghanaian children is unacceptable in a democratic society.”
The movement called for an urgent ministerial briefing to Parliament within 30 days, followed by quarterly progress reports.
