The Food and Drugs Authority until 2012, performed its duties of regulating activities of manufacturers and retailers across the country in two zones, according to the Public Health Act, 851, 2012.
The Ashanti Regional office regulated the Northern sector while the Accra office controlled the southern sector.
The Eastern/Volta office was subsequently, established in 2004. Mrs. Nora Nakie Tei-Larbi was the first Regional Head who administered operations from 2004-2008. She was succeeded by Roderick Daddy Adjei, whose tenure spanned between 2008 and 2015. Eugene Addo was appointed the head of the region from 2015 to 2018.
Some key founding employees include Eric Owusu, Regulatory Officer (2004 to 2009), Patience Ethel Nutakor, and Madam Betty Adjei who served as the administrator and caretaker from 2004 till date, while Evans Tetteh retired in 2021 as a senior driver.
Mr Gorden Akurugu assumed administrative roles in 2018, leading the office to win the FDA's best-performing region award among its peers in three consecutive years.
Under his watch, 24-hour border operations have been institutionalized to prevent the import of unregulated products into the country. Regulatory operations were also widened within the Volta and Oti Regions, leading to an increase in revenue mobilization. This feat made the Volta Region the best revenue mobilization team in three consecutive years.
Activities slated for the anniversary include clean-up exercise, donation to the Ho Central Prison, engagement with the media, fun games and other interesting activities.
The current administration lauded the efforts of the founding members and hardworking staff for their diverse contributions towards the growth of the Volta Regional Office.
