Ghana's President Nana Akufo-Addo has expressed satisfaction with the nation’s improved standard of facilities for international sports.
In his final State of the Nation Address to Parliament on Friday, January 3, Akufo-Addo mentioned the construction of several AstroTurfs across the country and the rehabilitation of other infrastructure.
According to him, the infrastructure played a significant role in Ghana’s successful hosting of the 13th African Games in Accra.
“The construction of some 150 Astroturf pitches across the country and the rehabilitation of exiting stadia has bolstered Ghana's standard as a hub for international sport including hosting successfully, despite all odds, the 2023 All African Games,” he said.
For the first time in history, Ghana welcomed over 13,000 athletes and officials from across Africa from March 8 to 23, 2024, at ten venues, and clinched 69 medals.
About $195 million was spent on infrastructure for the Games including the newly constructed Borteyman Sports Complex, and the completion of the University of Ghana Stadium
