An Accra High Court presided over by Justice Mary Yanzuh has served notice Assin North MP James Gyakye Quayson would have to conduct his own case should his lawyers fail to show up.

This was after the court had announced it had received a letter from Mr Quayson’s lawyer, Justin Teriwajah.

The lawyer explains in the letter that he was unwell and had been given three days of rest by a medical officer.

The lawyer is also said to have asked that the case is adjourned such that it resumes after the legal vacation.

Deputy Attorney General Alfred Tuah Yeboah was concerned that granting this request will mean the state’s witness will still be testifying in the new legal year.

He pointed out that it was improper that the state’s first witness Richard Takyi Mensah will not be allowed to conclude his testimony.

“…this case started in January 2022. Prosecution Witness (PW1) commenced his evidence in chief on 12th July 2022, it's been one year, 16 days since PW1 mounted the witness box.”

“In view of this, I will like to pray that this matter is adjourned to Monday subject to my lady’s convenience to have cross-examination of PW1 completed.”.

He continued that the records available show that Mr Teriwajah is the actual lawyer for the legislator.

The whereabouts of Tsatsu Tsikata who has mostly been conducting the case was thus not of concern to him.

Justice Yanzuh then called on Mr Quayson who was present in court to respond to the issue.

The legislator urged the court to grant the request of the lawyers. He also pointed out that he was equally unwell and required medical attention during the vacation as well.

“I wish you grant the request. I have been unwell for three years now”.

Justice Yanzuh then announced that the case will continue on July 31.

She warned should the lawyers fail to show up, she would call on the MP to conduct the cross-examination himself.

“If on July 31, counsel does not appear, the court will have no option than to have the accused person continue his cross-examination,” she stated.
