At least 16 commercial drivers were arrested, and their vehicles impounded on Monday, January 26, during a joint National Security operation targeting the charging of illegal transport fares in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital.
The exercise, conducted in the Sofoline and Santasi areas, also focused on traffic management at major intersections to reduce congestion and improve vehicle flow along the busy corridor.
The seized vehicles have since been handed over to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) for further action.

Deputy Ashanti Regional National Security Officer in charge of operations, Ivan Bilson, said the operation was prompted by persistent traffic congestion and confirmed reports of commercial drivers charging unapproved and excessive fares.
He explained that the affected stretch of road experiences heavy traffic daily and serves as a key route linking Kumasi to Cape Coast, Takoradi, Elubo and other destinations, often causing significant delays for commuters.

“As part of this exercise, we want to ensure a smooth flow of traffic, especially during peak hours when most people are returning home from work,” Mr Bilson stated.
He added that investigations revealed some drivers were exploiting passengers by charging full fares for very short distances, contrary to approved fare structures agreed with transport unions.

According to him, consultations had been held with the Metropolitan Assembly, leading to the arrest and impounding of vehicles belonging to offending drivers.
Mr Bilson noted that commuters had expressed satisfaction with the exercise and appealed for it to be sustained, warning that lax enforcement could encourage lawlessness and further inconvenience to the public.
