Day 1 of the 2026 Commonwealth Games saw history in the pool for Ghana, as legendary swimmer Abeku Jackson broke the national record in the men’s 50m backstroke, clocking 26.48 seconds in the heats.
Abeku, who competed in Heat 4, surpassed the previous Ghana national record of 26.84 seconds, which was held by Jason Arthur.
The performance earned him qualification to the semi-finals as a reserve.
Also in swimming, Nubia Adjei featured in the women’s 50m butterfly heats, finishing 8th and recording a time of 30.02 seconds.
In boxing, Abdul Wahib Omar suffered a heavy one-sided defeat to England's Patris Mughalzai in the round of 32 of the Men's 65kg. Omar was outclassed and suffered two knockdowns on his way to losing 5-0 on the scorecard.
Ghana will be involved in both swimming and boxing on Day 2 of the competition.
