Some teacher unions have called on the Speaker of Parliament to put a hold on all discussions on three educational policies that are currently before the House.
The unions, the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Tertiary Workers Union (TEWU), Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT), claim there is a deliberate move by government to exclude them from policy engagement surrounding the bills.
“We are asking the Speaker of Parliament to suspend all discussions on the three bills that are before him until we have been given documents and we have also made our input. Until then or anything short of that will create problems for all of us,” said President of GNAT, Philippa Larsen.
The bills include the Pre-Tertiary Bill 2019, Educational Regulatory Bill and the Complementary Education Bill 2019.
They have been submitted to the Education Committee of Parliament for consideration and subsequent reports laid before the House when Parliament resumes on October 22, 2019.
According to the teacher unions, they are yet to see these bills or make the necessary inputs, contrary to ILO-UNESCO recommendations.
“We find it inimical to the ILO-UNESCO recommendations concerning the status of teachers 1966, which encourages social dialogue,” she said.
