After their painful CAF Champions League exit at the hands of Tunisia’s Etoile du Sahel, Asante Kotoko will be hoping to compensate their fans by reaching the Confederation Cup group stage for the second year running.
But to achieve that, the Porcupine Warriors must overcome San Pedro in the play-offs.
Kotoko will host the first leg at Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on October 27 before travelling for the second fixture scheduled for November 3.
Ahead of the tie, here are 10 facts you need to know about San Pedro:
1. The Ivorian club was founded in 2004, located in a city called San-Pédro in southwestern Ivory Coast. FC San Pedro is one of the fastest-growing clubs in the West African country.
2. San Pedro is owned by Tunisian businessman, Mohammed Ali Hachicha, who bought the club in 2015 when they were in the second division. A year under his leadership, the club earned promotion to the Ivorian top-flight.
3. Mohammed Ali Hachicha has reportedly set a budget of $1m per season as he seeks to make San Pedro one of the elite football clubs in Africa.
4. San Pedro have never been crowned champions of the Ivorian topflight. Their best finish was in 2018/19 season when they placed second.
5. San Pedro have never played in the CAF Champions League but this is their second season in the CAF Confederation Cup.
6. They qualified for this year’s competition after finishing second in the 2018/19 Ivorian league. They drew a bye in the prelims before beating Guinean side Santoba FC with a 3-0 aggregate to set up a clash with Kotoko in the play-offs.
6. San Pedro won their first-ever trophy last year after beating AFAD Djekanou in Ivorian Cup finals.
7. FC San Pedro uses the Stade Auguste Denise which is a multi-purpose stadium with a capacity of about 8,000 as their home-ground.
8. The club is completing a training centre based in Brofodoume’ on an area of 22 hectares and also a stadium with a grandstand that can accommodate 2,500 to 3,000 spectators.
9. FC San Pedro are ranked 163rd in Africa according to Footballdatabase.
10. San Pedro’s official colours are orange and black.
