Holders University of Cape Coast (UCC) successfully defended their Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) crown at the 2020 edition of the biennial games.
With a total of 64 medals, comprising 28 gold, 23 silver and 13 bronze medals emerged overall winners. The feat extended their reign as Kings of universities sports in Ghana for the eighth year in a row.
Since 2012 University of Cape Coast has topped the overall medal table and this year’s competition held by the University of Ghana followed the script.

The University of Education Winneba came in second with 15 Gold medals, 11 silver and 17 bronze, University for Development Studies (UDS) came in third with 13 Gold, 11 silver and 15 bronze- and the host Institution, University of Ghana (UG) placed fourth with 12 gold medals, 21Silver, 19 bronze.
Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) were 5th on the log.
University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) annexed a bronze medal to placed sixth and Ghana Institute of Journalism, finished seventh with no medal. Other institutions that had no medals were Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), University of mines and technology (UMAT), University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) and University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA)
The 26th edition of the GUSA games was well organized by host University of Ghana with quite a number of records broken. A colourful closing ceremony climaxed by a final football match between UG and University of Mines and Technology (UMAT) ended the successful competition.
According to the Co-chair of the LOC, Dr Bella Bello Bitugu, the standards of this year’s Games, had been very impressive and was hopeful, Universities will at least maintain the standards or improving upon it in subsequent years.
This year’s competition, (Legon 2020) was held under the theme “Integrating Sports into Academia for Youth Empowerment and Development.”
Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and technology will host the next GUSA GAMES in 2022.
