The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei-Owusu is pushing for the party leadership of the NPP to scrap primaries for all first time MPs.
He was of the view that allowing first-term legislators to go unopposed helps them settle down as they get abreast of activities.
“All first-term MPs, I think, must run unopposed in the primaries. No matter what you have learned before coming, it will take you some time to understand the workings of parliament,” he said.
Speaking on PM Express, Joseph Osei-Owusu called on the party’s leadership to offer some protection for majority leadership in parliament as well.
Already there is growing resistance from aspiring contestants to calls that long-serving parliamentarians should be allowed to go unopposed.
One potential contestant for Efigya Sekyere East, Oheneba Gyamfi says there is a grand scheme to bar some hopefuls from vying for the seat.
“We’re yet to pick our nomination forms but issues coming up indicate that the chairman is not willing to use the nomination form to enable us file for the upcoming primaries,” Gyamfi said.
