The Transport Minister has defended government's decision to appoint a director for the yet-to-be constructed Keta Port in the Volta Region.
Kweku Ofori Asiamah told Parliament Tuesday that President Akufo-Addo appointed Dr Alexander Adusei Junior as a means to accelerate the promise he made to electorates in 2016.
According to him, despite the absence of physical construction ongoing, a lot of progress has been made in that regard.
Answering a question from the Keta MP, Richard Quashigah on the appointment of Dr Adusei Junior in 2018, he said it was justifiable as the appointee had the technical expertise.
Dr Adusei was appointed despite criticisms that there were already five directors of ports who could take care of business and there was no need for adding another person.
“The President in his own wisdom thought that paying particular attention to the Keta Port was so dear to him that he needed somebody who had the technical expertise to see to the operations of the port," he said.
The Minister added, 'he said that at the time that the person was appointed, there was no port, indeed there was no port but we needed to start the process, and the processes are part of the port that we’re putting in place.”
“We couldn’t just get up one day and put the structure there without going through the necessary steps that we needed to take," he said.
