The North Tongu MP wants the Planning Minister to be hauled before Parliament to explain the ongoing Ghana Card registration in the Eastern Region despite a ban.

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said Dr Anthony Akoto Osei must be questioned on why the registration exercise is still going when President has directed a ban on public gatherings.

The Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority (NIA), according to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP said, “he is waiting for orders from above” to stop the exercise.

This, the former deputy Education Minister says the Minister must respond to, as he describes the continuous registration exercise as putting the health of residents in those areas at risk.

The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) boss, Joseph Whittal on Thursday called on the NIA to suspend the exercise.

“NIA's action is a clear violation of the right to health and ultimately the right to life as stipulated under Articles 34(2), 13(1) and 33(5) of the 1992 Constitution respectively.”

He further called on President Nana Akufo-Addo and the Inter-Ministerial Committee to order the NIA to stop the registration exercises.

Meanwhile, 16 cases of the coronavirus pandemic have been recorded in Ghana with three of those not having any recent travel history.
