President Nana Akufo-Addo has applauded the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) for its dedication during the imposition of restriction in some parts of the country to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Speaking at the commissioning of the first phase of the Housing project for the Army under the Barrack Regeneration programme, the President said the role of the security agencies has helped minimize the spread of the virus.
“I am proud of your exceptional diligence and vigilance ensuring that the protocols and directives that were outlined were complied with especially during the three-week partial lockdown.
“You have been at the forefront of the battle to tackle this national emergency and your effort has been lauded in the areas of medical support, logistic chain management, the enforcement of the restrictive measures and operations on land, sea, and air,” he said.
Whilst highlighting the role played by the forces, the President acknowledged that the Covid-19 has disrupted planned activities for the GAF but asked them to maintain high morale and stick to the protocol outlined by the service.
President Akufo-Addo further pledged that as their Commander-in-chief, he will ensure that the welfare of the armed forces is improved to allow them carry out their duties efficiently.
“To redeem my pledge, the list of all roads in the garrisons have been submitted to the Roads and Highway Ministry and very soon work will begin on the roads that are not in good condition.”
At the event, the Defense Minister, Dominic Nitiwul said the Ghana Armed Forces has faced accommodation challenge for so long, hence, government’s regeneration programme.
Mr Nitiwul stressed that the $100 million project is being used to construct accommodation infrastructure in various garrisons across the country and will all be completed in due time for usage.
“This project will provide more accommodation for soldiers and their families.
“Inversely, the president's efforts is meant to serve you as men and women of the Ghana armed forces to continue to offer dedicated and commitment as well as meritorious service to motherland Ghana.”
The Defence Minister then urged the prospective occupants of the flats to carefully handle the property like they would their personal asset.
“Let us all use the limited resources that is provided judiciously and with care.”
On his part, the Chief of Defense Staff, Brigadier General Obed Akwa promised that the forces will always be loyal to Ghanaians and the government.
He also acknowledged government’s effort to adequately equip the force and lauded government for the regeneration initiative.
"Since your assumption of office your government has continued to equip all three services and this has enabled us, the Ghana Armed Forces to systematically evolve into a true professional multi-purpose counter capable Force."
