Chairman of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Seth Acheampong has refuted claims by NDC flagbearer, John Mahama, that the incumbent NPP government is responsible for security lapses in the country.
According to him, the former President's comments are inappropriate and without any basis.
Speaking on Joy News’ Newsnight on Monday, Mr. Acheampong acknowledged reports of cases but maintained that the allegations are inappropriate.
"There have been incidences of crime, but we are not in a state of anarchy, and that narrative of insecurity is becoming unbecoming. The earlier we all tune our mind to the security state of the country and how positive it is, the better for us.
"The global index for peace makes Ghana the safest country in West Africa and places us third in Africa, so where is the insecurity coming from?
“Let us not keep some mantras and choruses that are unfounded, let us speak to the issues as they are. We've never lived in the country without crime but we manage to prevent them from escalating. We have done a good job at maintaining public safety," he said.
The NDC flagbearer alleged during his campaign over the weekend that the current administration is responsible for tooling vigilante groups with state amoury.
But Mr. Acheampong says Mr Mahama's claims are only because he has no message for Ghanaians.
“There have been recent attempts by the National Democratic Congress to politicise our security forces. His claims are totally false and unfounded, and he ought to be ashamed of himself,” he said.
