Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) Freddie Blay has pleaded with supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to take the verdict of the Supreme Court on the election petition in good stride.

Speaking to the media, he reminded Ghanaians, and especially the supporters of the NDC of the fact that Ghana remains the only country we all have, as such it is important not to cause an uproar in the aftermath of the Supreme Court's dismissal of the petition.

He pleaded with the supporters to ensure that their reactions neither undermine the court nor the peace and stability the country has enjoyed over the years.

“We should build this country together. We want to rely on their goodwill, they should not destabilise this country by going away to other places saying things and/or doing propaganda that will make people lose confidence in themselves and in our own country,” he said.

This comes after former President John Mahama who lost the 2020 polls took the Electoral Commission to court, challenging the validity of results and the declaration of President Akufo-Addo as the winner.

But a seven-member panel of Supreme Court Judges in a unanimous decision, on March 4, dismissed the election petition filed by the 2020 NDC Presidential Candidate.

This, according to the apex court, is because the case before it has no merit thus it will not order a re-run of the election as the petitioner sought.

Reading the ruling of the court today, Chief Justice Anin Yeboah said the petitioner did not satisfy all the 5 issues outlined by the court to determine the case.

Mr Blay stated that he and some others knew the NDC was not going to win the case, however, this victory does not mean that the NPP can rest on its oars.

He encouraged the party supporters to continue to work to ensure not only the President’s dream for the country is realised but secure the party a win in the 2024 elections.

Meanwhile, General Secretary of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, ahead of the verdict, assured Ghanaians that the party will not undermine the peace of the country if the verdict did not go in their favour.

“We are not a lawless party, John Mahama is not a lawless person. I think over the years, the NDC and our leader have shown that we have this country at heart. We are democrats and we believe in the rule of law."
