Most valuable player at the just ended U-20 Cup of Nations, Fatawu Issahaku says receiving an invitation to join the Black Stars camp was beyond his wildest imagination.

The speedy Steadfast FC forward was drafted in by Black Stars Head coach Ck Akonnor and could make his debut for the national team at age 17.

He could follow in the footsteps of Ghana football greats including three time Africa footballer of the year Abedi Pele, current Black Stars captain Andre Ayew, ace defender Mohammed Gargo amongst others.

Speaking to Joy Sports George Addo Jnr on his arrival at the Black Stars Camp in Accra, Fatawu explained he couldn’t have imagined a Black Stars call up so soon.

“I was not expecting this at all, but was very happy to hear I was going to be part of the team, and to be with my seniors.

I received a call yesterday, from the Black Stars team manager telling me I had been invited to the Black Stars Camp, and I even asked again if he was sure about the news.

He wondered why and I replied, I’m surprised because I wasn’t expecting, and I think I’m privileged to be part of the team”.

Issahaku who just turned 17 earlier this month, was part of the maiden National U-15 team, captained Ghana at the Wafu Zone B U17 Cup in Togo earlier this year, and went on to win the best player award at the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations held in Mauritania.

Despite his burst unto the limelight, Fatawu is staying grounded.

“I am focused to learn as much as I can with the Black Stars.
I hope to enjoy the time I have with this great team and do what I know how to do best.”
