Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin has entreated Members of Parliament to strictly adhere to the Covid-19 safety protocols in spite of receiving the second vaccine doses.
About 109 MPs, 164 management staff and 419 others in Parliament have been inoculated in the second vaccination phase. But according to the Speaker, "this does not guarantee total immunity against the pandemic."
Addressing the floor of the House during its first meeting, Tuesday, after its recess, he noted that the country has not yet subdued the virus in its fight to protect the lives of Ghanaians.
"Honourable members, Covid-19 is real and continues to devastate most countries in Europe and Asia with India being the latest worst-hit country. I will like to take this opportunity to remind members that Ghana our beloved country is not out of the woods yet.
"The two doses of vaccines provide only 75 per cent immunity. We are accordingly advised to continue to observe the necessary Covid-19 protocols," he stated.
He added that "the policy on the need for staff and members of the House to space out as a means of decongesting the offices, the chamber of Parliament and other areas of Parliament is still the best way to go. Let us all endeavor to observe that."
Despite the significant number of persons vaccinated at the Parliamentary Service, a larger number are yet to take their second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccines.
In view of this, the Speaker of Parliament has given the assurance that the necessary measures are being put in place to ensure those eligible for the second jab are inoculated.
Details of the intiative he says will be communicated in due process.
