The General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association and a member of the Infectious Diseases Committee, Dr Titus Beyuo has stated that the new Delta variant of Covid-19 could be deadly for Ghana.
He said with the new variant now found in Ghanaian communities, our low vaccination rate, does not help.
Dr Beyuo was one of the discussants on Joy FM's Super Morning Show on Monday, to discuss the spread of the new Delta variant.
Although Ghana continues to implement various measures to fight the Covid-19 cases, 134 students and a staff of Achimota School have tested positive for Covid-19. Most of them are said to have contracted the new Delta Variant.
According to him, if Ghanaians take the situation lightly, because of the few cases recorded as well as the low death rate, a third wave of the disease could result.
"We have very very few percentages of our population vaccinated. So in the initial stages, as it is, the infection should be inching up."
He noted though, that looking at the demographics of the infected students and staff at Achimota School, they are healthy, so he is not expecting a number of them to be hospitalised, neither does he expect a lot of deaths to be recorded.
Meanwhile, statistics on the Ghana Health Service website indicate that the country currently has about 1,619 active Covid-19 cases, 85 new cases and 796 deaths.
