Former Ghana defender Frimpong Manso has revealed only five players were allowed to practice penalties during Ghana’s preparation for the 1992 Afcon in Seenegal.
Ghana appointed Otto Phister as replacement for Bukhard Ziese after the latter had secured qualification but the move split the team with the new coach mistrusting some senior figures in the team according to Frimpong Manso.
The Black Stars lost 10-11 on penalties to the Ivory Coast and Mano reckons the results may have been different if the coach’s methods for penalties practice had included the entire team.
“I don’t know if people told him if some of the players ill betray him if he did’t bring his own players.
“When we went for the training tour in Portugal some of us were not even allowed to train because of our relationship with Bukhard. He didn’t trust us. He only realized (his mistake) just before we left for Senegal”
He added that Tony Baffoe, Isaac Asare, Odartey Lamptey, Abedi Pele and one other player (he couldn’t remember) we selected by Otto Phister to practice penalty shootout after training.
“When it comes to penalty kicks, he will pick five players and ask the rest to go. Every time we finshed training the five of them will be practicing the penalties and the rest of us would either stay to watch or go.”
